So, as if I didn't already have enough to do this summer, I started a quilt. Now, for anyone who is not a sewer, let me explain something: making a quilt is a huge commitment. Once you start, you can put it down, but it'll hang over you forever. As if making a normal quilt weren't hard enough, I decided to take it a step further and embroider some of my squares so as to have book themes. As you can see, I made life a lot harder than I needed to.
But quilting, while it may not be for the faint of heart, is a good teacher. I'm only on week one, and I've seen that a few times.
It takes perseverance to make a quilt. If you can't stick with it, you can't finish it. And the Christian path is a lot the same. If you're not willing to put the work in, you're not going to get a lot out of it. Sure, you may still have a frumpy looking mess of a thing to go on your bed. But it won't be the same, pretty, masterpiece it was meant to be.
In 1 Corinthians 9:24-25 we are told this: Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.
No quilt will last forever. Not even Great-Granny's greatest masterpiece. My quilt, based off the way I use blankets, will be doing good to last my own lifetime! But if we are going to put so much time and care into something perishable, like a quilt, why would we not so much more put effort into our walk with God?
Maybe, like I did with my quilt, you didn't quite realize the commitment you were making when you started walking with Jesus. Now your seeing that to be a Christian it requires not only time, but a lot of effort too. Be encouraged! Like Paul said, we are not just running for something we can't take with us to heaven. We are working towards something that will last forever.
Hope you've enjoyed the first installment in the ongoing Book Quilt Saga! Have a blessed week, and feel free to leave a comment with feedback or takeaways! As always, Ad Lucem.
