Advent Day 8: Julie Yang

Writer's picture: JulieJulie

“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

-Isaiah 9:6

Have you ever felt the magic of the Christmas season?

Perhaps you have felt it while watching the white snowflakes drift down outside the window, like fragments of wishes sent from the heavens.

Perhaps you’ve felt it when a familiar Christmas song begins playing merrily over the radio, and a surge of comfort washes over you.

Perhaps you’ve felt it while catching a whiff of cinnamon, or peppermint, or pine—and you suddenly feel a rise of deep nostalgia.

Or, perhaps you have felt it when gazing at the Christmas decorations, at the wreaths and holly, the ornaments and nativity sets, and the glorious Christmas lights, twinkling like stars—and your heart swells with joy and hope.

“Merry Christmas!” echoes cheerfully around, from stranger to stranger, friend to friend. People everywhere you meet seem more generous, more forgiving, more kind, and more warm, despite the frigid cold of the winter weather.

Why do so many of us feel this way around Christmas? Why does the Christmas spirit, the magic of the season, exist?

Because Jesus is the Prince of Peace, and celebrating Him really does bring more peace into our lives.

Remembering Him, His peace and hope, makes us joyful in spite of all the problems we face. Remembering this, this echo of eternity, makes every little beautiful thing ring with a deep magic in

our souls.

The holiday season exists on peace and hope. But peace and hope exist far beyond just the holiday season.

Many people forget this. They only celebrate love and peace, joy and hope, generosity and kindness for a few days, and then forget it all when the Christmas trees are put away, when the Christmas songs stop playing, when the snow begins to melt.

But not us, not me and you. We will remember and celebrate Jesus and what His coming to the world means—to remember His love, His presence, His peace and light, all the wonderful elements that Christmas features—not just during Christmas, but every day of the year.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”

-John 14:27
